Shopping Centres in Shanghai

City Mall

1618 Nanjing West Road, Jing'an District, Shanghai
Tel: (21) 3217-4838

This gargantuan, rolling edifice of gleaming white marble right next to the Jing An Temple was designed by Paul Andreu. He also designed Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, Oriental Art Center, and the collapsed terminal at Charles de Gaulle airport. As expected, brand-name shops such as Montblanc, Burberry, and Jean Paul Gaultier share space with an eight-storey department store, a basement supermarket and food court, and dining and beauty outlets on the ninth floor.

Cool Docks

430-505 Zhongshan South Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai

About 2 km south of the Bund near the Shiliupu Wharf, this complex of shops and restaurants in restored old buildings and warehouses is supposed to be Shanghai's second Xintiandi, but has yet to fully take off. For now, if you're looking to get away from the crowds, this is a "cool" place to dine, shop, or get a tattoo.

Grand Gateway Plaza

1 Hongqiao Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai
Tel: (21) 6404-0111

The biggest and flashiest of the malls in the Xujiahui circle has a good mix of retail (clothing, books, accessories, electronic items, etc.), dining and entertainment outlets, a theatre (occasionally showing English-language movies) on the fifth floor, and a plethora of food court restaurants. Prices here are slightly lower than on Nanjing Road, but still not the best in town.

High Street Loft

1 Jiashan Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai
Tel: (21) 5466-6675

A cluster of former factories in the French Concession, High Street Loft is one of the hippest fashion, dining, and entertainment complexes in town. Many of the clothing stores feature the works of up-and-coming local designers.

IFC Mall

8 Century Avenue, Pudong New District, Shanghai
Tel: (21) 2020-7000

As part of the Shanghai International Finance Centre designed by Cesar Pelli, this brand-new, glittering, six-story shopping complex is chock-full of luxury stores fronted by the likes of Louis Vuitton and Armani. Apple's flagship Shanghai store is here, as well as a multiplex cinema and some high-end restaurants.
